Executive Director Message – February 2024

February 26, 2024

Dear One Commerce Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to discuss an important topic that has been on my mind lately, and that is the feedback we have received from our staff about their “why.” What motivates you to come to work every day, or what do you believe is your intrinsic value beyond just earning a paycheck?

As you may recall, we recently conducted a survey to better understand what creates stress for our employees. Now we want to find out what drives and motivates our employees—their “why,” as well as the barriers that get in the way of our “why.” We asked the members of the current roundtable to collect feedback from their divisions and teams. The results were both insightful and thought-provoking.

One common theme that emerged from the feedback was the impact of stress and workload on our employees’ sense of purpose and motivation. Many of you expressed that it can be difficult to stay focused on your “why” when you are feeling overworked and overwhelmed.

In another experience shared by a roundtable member, they likened office dynamics or politics to “wandering around in a dark hallway filled with cacti.” Ouch! It can be a prickly challenge to stay motivated and accomplish goals when feeling left in the dark. Getting to know others on your team gives individuals a better sense of how to navigate sensitive issues. Trust is the key to collaboration and success.

I want you to know that I hear you and that your feedback is incredibly valuable to me. It is my hope that we can work together to identify and address the barriers that may be interfering with your sense of purpose and motivation.

I encourage you to lean on your coworkers, look for synergies, and engage in team-building or social activities that contribute to collaboration and increase trust in each other. The sense of security that personal interactions create can make the connections more authentic and provide ease of navigation and effectiveness.

As we move forward, I want to assure you that your feedback is being taken seriously—whether through the roundtable, sharing your thoughts with a supervisor, or by submitting feedback through the feedback form. It is my belief that by working together, we can create a workplace that fosters a sense of purpose, motivation, and fulfillment. Thank you for your continued hard work and dedication.
