Executive Director Message – June 2023

July 6, 2023

Hi everyone,

Thank you for joining us at our June One Commerce meeting. It was great to see you all in person and hear from Rich Saunders and his thoughts on building a culture of internal and external trust and how trust can support innovation that serves all Utahns.

Rich also talked about how trust is built from competency, integrity, and vulnerability. As One Commerce, if we can see, listen to, and engage in the humanity of our people, together, we will grow our productivity, innovation, performance, and retention.

Our department’s mission to strengthen trust in Utah’s activities through regulation, enforcement, and education promotes a healthy business environment by protecting consumers and fostering a safe, fair, and competitive marketplace.

As state government employees, we understand the importance of providing a first-class customer experience to those we serve. That’s why we are committed to creating what Governor Cox calls a “no wrong door” infrastructure, where customers can easily provide feedback and promptly address their concerns. We want to ensure that every interaction with our department is positive, and we will do everything in our power to make that a reality.

We understand that innovation is critical to our success. We have hired the best and brightest minds to help us continuously improve and keep our services responsive to customer needs. We trust our employees to make critical decisions and will do everything we can to support them.

We are committed to fostering a culture of continuous improvement, where we strive to do better every day. We will work tirelessly to ensure our services are fair, efficient, and effective for all Utahans.

I want to circle back with you about the new performance management system we’ve been discussing, which Governor Spencer Cox also mentioned in his recent message [link to message and video].

At its core, the performance management system is about improving and rewarding good performance. It’s a cultural shift that requires us to take all the great things many of us have been doing for years and add any principles or practices that will enable us to continuously improve.

This change is a chance to boost motivation and increase accountability to continue attracting and retaining talented and committed public servants. It’s also an opportunity for us to make our state government the best place to work.

We know that any change takes time and effort, but we’re confident that we can successfully implement this new system and make our state government an even better place to have a career. Ultimately, these changes will help us better serve the people of Utah.

Thank you for your hard work and passion for public service. If you have any questions about the new performance management system, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Have a great July, everyone!
