Optional Substitute Leave for State Employees

On Monday January 31st Governor Cox issued an executive order (attached) to help address the expanding need for substitute teachers and support staff. The order allows participating state employees to take up to 30 hours of administrative leave to work in schools. This could be as a substitute teacher, secretary, cafeteria worker, or other support services position.

This is how it works:

  1. If you are interested in participating, please reach out to your supervisor. Participation is conditional on approval from your supervisor as well as your division/office management, and may depend on work priorities and coverage needs.
  2. If you are given permission to participate. Work with your supervisor on the dates and hours you will be out. 
  3. You apply to be a substitute with your local school district. This step involves completing a job application and a background check.
  4. Once you’re hired, the district will make assignments and if your supervisor approves, you spend the day working in a school. And you get your state pay. It’s that easy. 
  5. If you hit a snag or have any questions, reach out to your agency’s HR representative. They know how to help you get started and we’ve given agency leaders flexibility to fit this program into each agency’s needs.
  6. This state program covers 30 hours of state pay and is in effect until June.
