Executive Director Message – Winter 2025

March 6, 2025

Hello Team Commerce,

As we enter the third month of 2025, I have been reflecting on our progress, and I want to emphasize our commitment to listening to your feedback and taking action where possible. I understand that change can sometimes be challenging, and I want to assure you that the entire leadership team values your input and perspective.

We believe that your voices are critical in shaping the future of the Department of Commerce. We actively seek your feedback through various channels, including feedback forms, roundtable sessions, internal focus groups, one-on-one meetings, and quarterly One Commerce Meetings. We approach these discussions with genuine curiosity and a desire to understand how to improve together. The leadership team meets regularly to discuss your feedback and identify opportunities for growth.

Your feedback has directly led to several improvements, including:

  • Hosting our recent technology hackathon, which addressed significant challenges, such as the ongoing issues with Utah ID.
  • Hosting focus group sessions to discuss strategic planning.
  • Launching our new employee dashboard to provide easy access to your schedule, completed training, and recognitions, like GDP.
  • Securing Gemini for all employees, with an initial training session on its features on March 4.
  • Adding a pebble ice machine and a coffee machine to Commerce Commons.

We carefully consider your comments and concerns—driven by our goal to create the most efficient and supportive environment for everyone. These changes are not for the sake of change but rather a commitment to building a positive work environment and culture. I am confident in your ability to adapt and thrive in this evolving environment.

I know that ongoing change can sometimes create uncertainty, but I want you to know that we have implemented these changes with confidence in your skills and expertise. We listen to your feedback, and while we may not always be able to implement every suggestion, we genuinely try our best to address your needs and concerns.

Thank you for your continued contributions and for embracing the journey of change with us.

Here are several effective ways to make your voice heard:

  • Fill out a feedback form
  • Provide feedback to your division representative for the roundtable, who will request your focused feedback monthly prior to those meetings
  • Participate in surveys
  • Participate in Commerce Conversations
  • Share feedback with your direct supervisor, division leadership, and coworkers
  • Participate in the Q&A during One Commerce Quarterly Meetings

Together, we are on an exciting path, and I am confident that our collective efforts will lead us to success.

Warm Regards,

Margaret Busse
